Your personal safety is as important as it gets. If episodes have escalated from mind games to bruises, it’s time to put your pride aside and get some help from parents, teachers, police or other adults you can trust. You owe it to yourself to stay in one piece. You have important things to accomplish in your life.
Parents often can’t understand why their kids don’t tell them they’re being bullied. They’re your parents. Always remember that they love you, even if they’re not so good at expressing it. They want to know.
So why keep it a secret?
- You’re ashamed of being bullied.
- You’re afraid of retaliation if you tell an adult.
- You don’t think anyone can help you. You feel helpless.
- You don’t think anyone will help you. You feel hopeless.
- You have bought into the lie that bullying is a necessary part of growing up.
- You may believe that adults are part of the lie—they bully too and minimize the impact.
- You think that “ratting” on someone is not cool.

You’re on the verge of adulthood, and so will need to be your own judge. But if you’re being physically hurt, you need to remember that all of the positive self-talk in the word will not get you out of intensive care. You need to take whatever measures you can to protect yourself—always.

Some forms of cyberbullying are considered to be criminal acts. Under the Criminal Code of Canada, it’s a crime to communicate repeatedly with someone if your communication causes them to fear for their own safety or the safety of others. It’s also a crime to publish a “defamatory libel”, writing something that is designed to insult a person or is likely to hurt a person’s reputation by exposing him or her to hatred, contempt or ridicule.
A cyberbully may also be violating the Canadian Human Rights Act, if he or she spreads hate or discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, family status or disability.
High tech harassment comes hand in hand with high tech policing. Local authorities have task forces in place to catch modern-day cowards. Make them your ally. Then turn everything off.
